Beautiful Findings: The Finite Defined by the Nonfinite

Design & Style

As far as graphic design goes this post might be going out on a limb, but when it comes to inspiration art is definitely one of the first resources to go to. This is the work of late artist Roman Opalka, French-Polish painter that devoted his life to create some amazing works of art that exceed the limits of patience. His series of canvases called Details is an extenuating work that primarily reflects on the continuity of everything and the sense of infinity. Every canvas is a lineal succession of numbers painted by hand -no rulers- with a size 0 brush. Just the idea of completing one of these paintings might look extenuating, even more if you consider that the series had been created from 1965 to 2011, the year of his death.

“All my work is a single thing, the description from number one to infinity. A single thing, a single life.”

So what about graphic design? Works like these remind us of the importance of being constant with your work and that this perseverance will surely create some outstanding pieces. Also the attention to detail and the precision of the numbers and layout of each painting are an inspirational example for the creation of patterns and typographical work.

The last number Opalka painted before his death was 5,607,249.
