Celebrating 50 years of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition

September 03, 2014

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. This annual photography competition is a much-anticipated event that celebrates the very best of nature photography from around the world.

Every year, thousands of amateur and professional photographers compete for their chance to shine in this highly regarded photography contest. Along with much status, recognition and fame, the winning photographs also become a part of a major exhibition at the Natural History Museum that tours the world. The winning photographs are also featured in several different magazines throughout the world adding to this contests allure and prestige.

There were over 41,000 entries in this years competition. Forty-three finalists have been chosen by London’s Natural History Museum and the BBC. These 43 finalist’s photos are remarkable, heart stopping and impressive. They seem to capture some of nature’s purest moments and they are a good reminder to us all of Mother Nature’s diversity, spirit and awe-inspiring power.

As a special bonus to the competition this year, the general public has been asked to participate in this contest. A special “People’s Choice” category has been added to the competition and you can participate today by casting your vote on the competition’s website until September the 5th. The winners of all categories will be announced in October.

Here are my favorites of the 43 fabulous finalists:
