Cool Findings: Typographic Chess

Design & Style

Every now and then an idea so brilliant and simple comes up and it's just impossible not to mention it. This time is the work of Hat Trick Design, a UK based design studio whose portfolio showcases a wide variety of projects in the most diverse media. This particular object stands out because of its cleverness and simplicity that will appeal typography lovers and chess players alike. It's a typography based chess set, in which every piece is replaced by a 3D figure with each respective initial letter.

The typeface in which this set is based on is called Champion (Lightweight) and designed by Hoefler Frere Jones. Each letter is laser cut in acrylic and that's basically it, it couldn't really get any simpler than that. Check out their limited edition over at their shop and here's a presentation video for it.
