Beautiful Branding: Kiev's Arsenale 2012

Design & Style

Kiev is holding its First Biennale of Contemporary Art, and for such occasion design studio Barnbrook created a very interesting visual identity. The festival gathers over 100 artists from all over the world and the subject to be explored in this edition is The Best of Times, The Worst of Times, Rebirth and Apocalypse in Contemporary Art.

The visual identity of the Biennale is based on 4 hubs devised by the Artistic Director David Elliott:
1. The Restless Spirit / 2. In the Name of Order / 3. Flesh / 4. The Unquiet Dream- each one of these topics reflected on these abstract forms that converge in this eclectic identity.

There is no fixed logo for the event, but an ever-changing font comes into play to create an original identity. It's an open-sourced based type (it's called DejaVu) that basically gathers alternative letterforms like Cyrillic, Latin and even icons that are randomly combined to create "volatile" texts. It' definitely an avant-garde branding process, through the abstract illustrations and diverse symbols it manages to create a vibrant and modern looking event- one that really channels the spirit of the show.
