Cartography Love: Novelty Maps By Dorothy

Design & Style

Dorothy is a UK based studio that has some very impressive creations under their arm. Their shop is filled with very original products that range from plastic figurines to prints and house appliances; but what really caught my attention was their novelty maps they've created inspired by pop culture. One of them is based on the fictional mapping of famous movies while the other is a map created out of songs.

The film map references over 900 movies and they're placed as if they were part of one big city. The Map, which is loosely based on the style of a vintage Los Angeles street map has its own Hollywood Boulevard and includes districts dedicated to Hitchcock and Cult British Horror movies. Like most cities it also has its own Red Light area. There's an A-Z key at the base of the Map listing all the films featured with their release dates and names of the directors.

On the other hand, the song map was created by their own obsession with music. This map has a more contemporary look with its bold strokes and typeface and it's made out of 390 song titles worth of 23 hours of music that you can also find in the spotify playlist they set up. This map went so popular they even released a second version commissioned by Saint Etienne to cover their latest album 'Words and Music'.
