Most cities around the world are now abuzz with talk of the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup. This year commemorates the 19th FIFA World Cup and it is being held in South Africa from June 11th to July 11th.  This is the first time that the World Cup will be played on  African soil.

The FIFA World Cup is a month-long international football competition that is held every four years. Since the beginning of the tournament in 1930, every four years, thirty-two teams from around the world have gathered in one international city to compete for the highly prized World Cup Trophy. Just how immense is this tournament? The World Cup is the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world.  Just to give you a better idea, an estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 World Cup which was held in Germany.

For each World Cup, a logo design is created. This special and highly broadcast logo design usually combines football imagery with images or colours from the host country. The 2010 World Cup logo design was released on July 7th 2006 and it was designed by a famous design agency called Switch Design.

Below is the logo design that they created for this event.

What do you think?

FIFA World Cup logo design - South Africa 2010

Overall, I like this logo design. I like that it is very original and creative. I like how the colours of the South African flag were incorporated into the logo design and how they invoke feelings of both energy and movement. There are a few elements in the design however, that I don’t like. I don’t like the typography that they chose to use or the illustration of the man that they chose to use in the logo design. That being said, I believe that they are both based on historic African rock paintings so even though I don’t like them very much, they remind the world of Africa’s long heritage and unique identity.

Below is a small showcase of some of the World Cup logo designs from the past.

How do you think the 2010 South African World Cup logo design ranks up against those of the past?

FIFA World Cup logo design - Mexico 1970       FIFA World Cup logo design - West Germany 1974

FIFA World Cup logo design - Argentina 1978       FIFA World Cup logo design - Spain 1982

FIFA World Cup logo design - Mexico 1986       FIFA World Cup logo design - Italy 1990

FIFA World Cup logo design - USA 1994       FIFA World Cup logo design - France 1998

FIFA World Cup logo design - Korea Japan 2002       FIFA World Cup logo design - Germany 2006

I have two favourite logo designs among this list. I like both the Mexico 1970 logo design as well as the Korea Japan 2002 logo design. I like how they are both very simple and stylish. I love the sleek lines in the Korea Japan logo design. It seems to accurately represent those two countries in my mind. I also like the font that they chose to use in the 2002 Korea Japan logo design.
