It was long due but the moment is finally here: Microsoft's logo got a makeover. So what's the direction they went after the already classic four-colored waving flag? They opted for a minimal approach keeping the signature colors but applied to a flat logo that consists of four squares in replacement of the previous flag. The opinions about this new look are divided, either considering it a boring logo or it being finally the step they needed to insert themselves into current design trends by getting rid of the oh so very dated previous one and stepping into the sleeker style of other tech companies.

The design consists of has two components: the logotype and the symbol. For the logotype they've used a sans serif font called Segoe, which is the same font they'll be using for all the products applications. As previously stated, the symbol’s squares of color are an evolution of the previous logo and are intended to express the company’s diverse portfolio of products.
The new design comes before the release of Microsoft's update of their products and as themselves have said they're really excited about this entire transformation. The applications of the logo are being used already and it's a head start before the release of Windows 8. Will this new look help out Microsoft to gain back some good reputation against the sleek look of Apple and others alike? We'll just have to wait and see.
